Israeli actress Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious, Knight and Day, Fast Five) will play Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder‘s upcoming Batman vs. Superman film, Variety has revealed this week.

Gadot will be joining Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman, confirming earlier rumours of a Wonder Woman part in the film, and adding further weight to speculation that it will be a kind of Justice League movie, perhaps featuring other, as-yet unconfirmed DC characters. According to Variety, the Flash is “said to be locks to make an appearance in some fashion, whether that’s a significant role or a cameo.”

“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

As The Mary Sue notes, however, the angle played up here is an interesting one, given Snyder’s “hit and miss” track record on female characters (see Sucker Punch) and, as they put it, “we’re still looking at the most well-known superheroine in the world making her big screen debut in at most third billing in a sequel to someone else’s franchise that appears to focus primarily on two male characters”. Another fear is that introducing the character in this way will not allow adequate time to delve into her interesting origin story, which is much less well known than those of either Batman or Superman.

Nevertheless, the confirmation of a movie debut for the character alone is sure to excite many DC fans, and with women still woefully under-represented in the world of the superhero blockbuster, it can only be taken as a move in the right direction.
