Disney announce The Descendants, a new twist on classic characters

The Descendants LogoWith series such as Once Upon A Time and Grimm proving to studios that audiences have an appetite for new versions and spin-offs of their favourite characters, it was not long before studio executives commissioned another one of these projects to hit our screens. However, leave it to Disney to make an interesting move by having the project targeted at a younger/family audience (as opposed to having it on their more adult-centric ABC channel) on the company owned and obviously branded, Disney Channel. But what will this project be about and how will it incorporate the characters we all know and love?

The answer ladies and gentleman is, The Descendants, a story based around the modern day progeny (that is children to you and me) of some of Disney’s most villainous characters. A story that sees them question the evil that has always been a part of them. The live-action original movie  will be directed by Kenny Ortega, the man responsible for the choreography and directing of High School Musical, and is based on a script written by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott. The story is as follows:

Descendants is set in a present day idyllic kingdom, where the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s Beauty And The Beast) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters. These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evvie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?”

So it would seem that we have a film that is a mixture of ideas such as High School Musical and Mattel’s Monster High line of characters. The Descendants is due to start production in 2014 with an eye for a 2015 release and it would not be a surprise if we see either a TV series based on this movie or a plethora of sequels in the years to come either.

Disney enthusiasts will also note that the apple on the logo contains one of the company’s notorious, “Hidden Mickeys,” a little treat worked into most of the company’s brands as a way of paying homage to their well known mouse.

For now though all we are left to do is wish upon a star that we are not going to be presented with a music ridden massacre of the franchises we love just for the sake of making a bit more money when 2015 rolls around. Granted if we are, then at least we can say, in the immortal words of High School Musical, that we are all in this together.
