When Marnie Was There (Background)

Studio Ghibli revealed through their distributor Toho that their next animated feature film is to be an adaptation of the British novel When Marnie Was There, by Joan G. Robinson.

The novel was published in 1967 and tells the story of Anna, a foster child who is sent to Norfolk, spending her summer with an old couple. She soon comes across a house where she meets a girl called Marnie. They become friends, only for Anna to slowly learn that Marnie is not all that she seems.

The film is to be directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who also helmed Ghibli’s Arrietty. The script will be written by Keiko Niwa and Masashi Ando.

Ghibli have already unveiled an official website for the film. When Marnie Was There is expected to be released in Japan in summer 2014.
