WWE Best PPV Matches 2013 DVD review

PPV1While the Best PPV Matches sets are generally of a good standard and always provide a good few highlights of a WWE year, it’s safe to say that 2013 provides more than most. With guys like CM Punk and Daniel Bryan on top, alongside new blood like The Shield, arguably the in-ring quality of matches in 2013 was better than ever. Of course, this depends on your own personal taste, but there’s no doubt that the excitement, athleticism and drama has been at an all-time high, and Best PPV Matches 2013 is one of the most enjoyable sets in many years.

The truth is you could easily fill up an entire set with the aforementioned superstars as they have always delivered on the big stage from one month to the next. CM Punk’s journey in 2013 was the most emotional, starting off the year vs The Rock at the tail end of the Straight Edge Superstar’s historic WWE Championship reign. The Royal Rumble played host to the epic clash of past and present, with Punk’s reign ending at 434 days. He then moved on to something equally as important – attempting to end the streak of The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 29. Coming up short there, the rest of the year was spent in a more personal feud vs Paul Heyman, including his match here vs. Brock Lesnar. You can certainly make a solid argument for both The Undertaker and Lesnar matches being the best in 2013.

Speaking of Brock Lesnar, his match against HHH at Extreme Rules is included, and since he has returned to WWE he has certainly lived up to his Beast Incarnate nickname. His matches are nothing short of brutal and he has an aura like no other. There are a couple of dangerous and risky matches on the set, with The Viper Randy Orton vs The Big Show from the same Extreme Rules PPV, and also a multi-man Money In The Bank Ladder Match from the MITB PPV proving that many young superstars are willing to take any risks they can to get to the top. The World Heavyweight Championship MITB match was one of the most innovative and spectacular matches of the year, with Dean Ambrose of The Shield particularly crazy and pushing boundaries like no other.

The Shield are also featured in a match in early 2013 from Elimination Chamber vs John Cena, Sheamus and Ryback, as well as Rollins/Reigns vs the Rhodes brothers at Battleground in October. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more emotionally charged match any year. No doubt the main man when it comes to getting the audience emotionally invested is Daniel Bryan and here we see his WWE Championship win vs John Cena at Summerslam, as well as a highlight of his feud vs The Authority as he stepped inside Hell In A Cell to take on Randy Orton for the vacated title. Not only was that challenging enough, but Special Referee Shawn Michaels made the result all the more unclear.

Beyond the top offerings on the set, John Cena and The Rock had a Wrestlemania rematch, Curtis Axel and AJ Lee both won their first championships, and Alberto Del Rio had some strong matches against Dolph Ziggler, RVD and Cena. 2013 certainly delivered on all levels, and showed that if you’re after wrestlers that deliver once that bell rings, we’re in safe hands with the likes of Punk, Bryan and The Shield going forward. It will certainly be interesting to see what 2014 brings with more returning superstars and the historic Wrestlemania XXX right around the corner. This set is a must have for any wrestling fan.
