Argos and Amazon cut price of Premium Wii U down to £179.99

Wii U Premium Pack with Nintendo LandThis morning, high street retailer Argos reduced the price of the Wii U Premium Pack with a copy of Nintendo Land down to £179.99. Online retailer Amazon have also recently followed suit, reducing the same bundle down to the same price.

While some retailers had reduced the price of the Wii U below £200 on the run up to Christmas, what’s interesting about Argos’ price cut is that this is not listed as a sale price. It will be interesting to see if other retailers decide to match Argos’ price or drop it even further.

Strangely Argos’ other Wii U bundles are still priced £249.99 or more. So for example, you could go down to Argos and purchase a Premium Wii U with Nintendo Land, and pick up The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD separately for a total of £224.98, which makes it cheaper than the cost of The Wind Waker HD Bundle (£255.99). However, it’s certainly possible that the other Wii U bundles may see a reduction.

The price cut comes just days after Nintendo president Satoru Iwata acknowledged in a statement that the company will be making a loss this financial year, highlighting the Wii U’s poor global sales. Iwata noted that Wii U sales in the U.S. and Europe “were significantly lower than our original forecasts, with both hardware and software sales experiencing a huge gap from their targets.”

Nintendo revised their forecast for the number of Wii U consoles they expected to sell in the 12 months to the end of March to 2.8 million units, down from 9 million. The news resulted in Nintendo’s share price dropping sharply at the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Does the recent price drop tempt you into purchasing a Wii U?
