Paul Bettany to play the Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron

With the casting of Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch it would have appeared that everything was in place for the next Avengers movie, but it seems like that wasn’t quite true. It’s not unusual for Marvel to want to keep things hidden for as long as possible so that we have some surprises. Surprises like having Paul Bettany joining the crew to play the Vision.

In the comics Vision is created by Ultron as a foil for Hank Pym, his own creator. But in the end Vision becomes one of the good guys and even has a relationship with the Scarlet Witch.

We’ve spoken before about the changes that Joss Whedon will be making to Ultron’s origin story. It’s now widely believed that Tony Stark will be the one to invent Ultron. This bit of info came from a casting call back in August and was also hinted at by the very first Avengers 2 teaser. (See below)

Naturally this leaves us with a few questions. Paul Bettany has been the voice of JARVIS in Iron Man since the beginning, so is there some connection there? Will JARVIS be stolen by Ultron and turned into the Vision or is it just more likely they knew that Paul Bettany would do a good job?

This news comes from a surprising source, a reporter at the Daily Mail, but the story seems genuine. Not only that but it is backed up by another news site that not only confirms the news but has a description of the Vision’s costume. (How it stands at the moment anyway). According to them Jeremy Renner and Bettany are both at Shepperton Studios for costume fittings and make-up tests.

It has a helmet akin to the Iron Man armor, but it’s designed more like a face than a smooth Stark helmet. The iconic yellow and green are present in the design, but it’s more metallic shades than bright ‘comic book colors.’ They said it reminds them somewhat of the T-1000 from Terminator 2 but it’s not as shiny. The yellow metal “liquid” bits seem to light up. This may or may not happen since there are two designs for that section. One lights up the other doesn’t. That’s the only difference. The cape is present, but they say it appears to only “pop out” when in flight mode. The cape sports some similar shades of yellow as the body. The “neck pieces” are the same yellow but they seem to shift positions from “standing” (for lack of a better word) to “flight mode.”

Elsewhere the rumour mill has been at it again with talk about Ms Marvel surfacing again. There are claims that the final bit of major casting left to make is for Ms Marvel. These come from The Latino Review this time, but we’ll take this news with a pinch of salt until there are confirmations from elsewhere.

And one final bit of news, Marvel are in talks with Evangeline Lilly (last seen as Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) for a female lead role in Ant Man. We’ve heard no specifics on who the character might be, but Janet Van Dyne is the first woman to come to mind. Naturally these are just talks and Ant Man is even further away than the next Avengers so things could still change.
