Gotham gets its Gordon

B-McKenzieimageFox have announced that Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C) is to take on the lead role of Detective James Gordon in the upcoming Gotham television series.

The announcement comes just weeks after it was announced that Gotham would no longer solely focus on the origin story of Commissioner Gordon, but will now feature all of the classic Batman villains, along with a young Bruce Wayne.

“The show will arc a young Bruce Wayne from a child (around 12) into the final episode of the series, when he will put on the cape,” said Fox chairman Kevin Reilly. Also on tap are The Riddler, Catwoman, The Penguin, and of course The Joker. “We will see how they get to become who they are as Gotham is teetering on the edge.”

This change of direction is incredibly reminiscent of an idea banded between movie making maestro, and all round chatty man, Kevin Smith, and award winning Batman writer Paul Dini on two episodes of Smith’s ‘Fat man on Batman’ podcast, which aired in November and December last year, during which the dynamic duo created and Pod-pitched a show called ‘Shadow of the Bat’. But that’s probably just a coincidence…

Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) wrote the script for the pilot, and will serve as executive producer, while Danny Cannon (CSI, Nikita) will direct and executive produce the pilot. Just wonder if the casting of Bruce Wayne for this show will cause the same kind of internet storm as the last.
