Variety has revealed a series of new casting updates for Fox‘s upcoming Gotham series, including classic villain The Penguin and Bruce Wayne‘s faithful, father-like butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

4899152370_a732cf6f76First off, Oswald Cobblepot, better known as supervillain The Penguin, will be played by Robin Lord Taylor, who has previously appeared in episodes of The Walking Dead and Life on Mars, as well as the film Another Earth. At the point at which we find him in this series, Cobblepot will be “a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney“, who uses excessive politeness to hide his lust for power. He is described as having “the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal”.

Butler Alfred, meanwhile, will be played by Sean Pertwee, son of Doctor Who’s third Doctor. Pertwee, who currently plays Lestrade in Elementary, is perhaps best known for playing tough, hard-nosed characters, so we can probably expect him to bring a bit of military edge to the part. Variety describes the series’ version of Alfred as “a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London” who is “fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne”.

6899104240_6d6b4c1131_oSlightly less well known but equally important, Captain Sarah Essen, head of the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad and boss to Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), will be played by Zabryna Guevara, while Erin Richards, whom you may recognise from Being Human, Merlin and Misfits, will play Gordon’s fiancée, Barbara Kean. These two characters offer an interesting contrast, which becomes even more striking if you know a little about how their storylines play out in the comics. On the one hand, Captain Essen’s “Machiavellian skill”  seems “as much corporate litigator as cop”, allowing her to effectively balance “the two worlds of police and politics”. Kean, meanwhile, is a “sophisticated emergency doctor” with a strong moral compass and a sense of loyalty towards her husband-to-be.

No news yet to report on the casting of Bruce Wayne himself, but let us know what you think of the decisions so far.
