Shooting Oshimen in the Face ~ Namco Bandai’s Sailor Zombie: AKB48 Arcade Edition

Mayuyu drops.

Takamina is next, falling uselessly in her gore stained uniform.

Yet even as they fall, you can see Yukirin stumbling forward, arms outstretched. Your heart does not falter. Nor does your aim.

Such is the presence of Sailor Zombie: AKB48 Arcade Edition, a new cabinet from Namco Bandai due to debut in April in Japanese arcades across the country.

Looking something like the precocious lovechild of a purikura booth and Operation Wolf, the game sees players take hold of a vaccine light gun controller and pit themselves against hordes of zombified AKB48 members in first-person perspective, blasting away at the idol group until each member is either cured of their flesh rotting debilitative condition or seriously concussed.

To add spice to the gameplay, extra dance levels have been incorporated in which the player must flail frantically against their zombie oshimen in a series of dance offs as the machine itself blasts out popular AKB songs.

Famitsu began streaming a preview of the game in action.

With a forthcoming TV serial helmed by Ryohei Watanabe and Isshin Inudo—one of the two writers of director Ryuhei Kitamura’s cult 2000 movie, Versus—and staring further AKB members, Kenkyuusei Nana Owada, and former old Team 4 members Juri Takahashi, and Rina Kawaei, Sailor Zombie looks set to be the latest in obscure and unexpected AKB trends to emerge in the wake of the recent announcement of the group’s Grand Reformation Festival.
