Back in 2011, Nike released a limited number of “Air MAG” trainers, modelled on Marty McFly’s shoes from Back to the Future II. At the time, fans observed that the trainers were missing the “power laces” featured in the film, but no more! These special, self-tightening laces should be available from next year, according to designer Tinker Hatfield.

The news came during an appearance by Hatfield at Jordan Brand’s Flight Lab in New Orleans on Friday, where he was heard saying simply, “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!”

Nike_MagThe statement will be welcomed by Back to the Future fans around the world, who have been diligently reminding all the scientists and designers out there via social media that they have only one year left to ensure the sci-fi franchise’s predictions come true. These power laces will bring us one step closer to making Back to the Future’s vision of 2015 a reality.

Each of the 1,500 pairs of Nike MAG trainers sold in 2011 were auctioned on eBay, with profits donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Despite the small number of shoes made, the auctions raised almost $6 million for the charity, proving just how popular this promised product could be. Though Nike haven’t yet specified whether or not the power laces will come attached to a new run of MAG trainers, or whether they’ll be auctioned in a similar fashion to the shoes, they’re sure to cause something of a stir when they are finally released.
