CSI Planted Cyber Crime Spin-Off to Air This Spring

Ten years after the launch of its last spin-off series, CSI: NY, CSI has announced a brand new offshoot which will take cyber crime as its subject matter.

Written by CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker, showrunner Carol Mendelsohn and former showrunner Ann Donahue, the new spin-off represents a departure from its sister series’ focus on criminal forensics, instead exploring more modern, technological crimes. Leading the cast of characters will be Special Agent Avery Ryan, in charge of the FBI’s Cyber Crime Division in Quantico, Virginia. According to Deadline, Ryan is “tasked with solving major crimes that start in the mind, live online, and play out into the real world.”

The project is inspired by the work of Irish cyberpsychologist Mary Aiken, who is also producing the show. Zuiker, Mendelsohn and Donahue will executive produce, along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman.

Though the upcoming show is reportedly not linked to Zuiker’s earlier CBS series Cyber Crimes, his research for that programme led him to meet with the CIA, FBI and US Department of Defense, providing him with an insight that will doubtless come in handy for his new work. Over the years, Zuiker has built up a considerable reputation for engaging with digital technology and its wider implications, including in his digi-novel Level 26 and his digital film Cybergeddon.

The new planted cyber crime spin-off will air as an episode of CSI on CBS this Spring.
