Welsh actor to lead NBC Pilot Constantine

Deadline recently revealed that welsh actor Matt Ryan has landed the lead role of John Constantine in NBC’s pilot on the DC comic series Constantine for Warner Bros TV. Ryan, born in Swansea, has notably appeared in Layer Cake and more recently did voice work for the video game Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

The character of John Constantine is described as, “An occult detective and professional sorcerer from Liverpool, England. His gritty and brutal attitude makes him recognizable as a cynical, foul-mouthed, chain-smoking anti-hero.”

The character was famously portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the 2005 feature, Constantine. Reeves unfortunately didn’t fit the mould of the scruffy blonde from Liverpool. You’ll see in our side-by-side comparison (above) that Ryan could easily be transformed to the character created originally by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben.

The project is being written by Dexter executive producer Daniel Cerone from a project he co-penned with Warner Bros’ David S. Goyer, the man behind the pen when it comes to DC adaptations such as Batman Begins and Man of Steel. Get excited!
