Chris Carter’s The After Amongst Four Series Green-Lit by Amazon

Earlier this year, Amazon got audiences involved in its TV development process by making a selection of pilots available to watch online and asking viewers to vote for which ones they’d like to see made into full series. The results are now finally in, with four new series having been given the green light on Wednesday, including a science-fiction show by X-Files creator Chris Carter.

The AfterAlong with Carter’s The After, the three other chosen pilots were Bosch, a police drama adapted from Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch novels; Mozart in the Jungle, a dramedy based on a memoir by oboist and journalist Blair Tindall; and Transparent, a black comedy about a dysfunctional family.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, The After follows eight strangers who are thrown together by mysterious forces beyond their control. The series will be produced by Gabe Rotter and executive produced by Georgeville Television’s Marc Rosen. Its cast includes Adrian Pasdar (Heroes, Profit), Aldis Hodge (Leverage, A.T.O.M.), Andrew Howard (Limitless, The Hangover Part II), Arielle Kebbel (Gilmore Girls, The Vampire Diaries), Jamie Kennedy (Ghost Whisperer, The Cleveland Show), Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue, Desperate Housewives), Jaina Lee Ortiz and Louise Monot.

Co-written by Eric Overmyer (Law & Order, The Wire) with the source novels’ original author Michael Connelly, Bosch will star Titus Welliver (Argo, Lost) in title role, alongside Annie Wersching (24), Amy Price-Francis (King, 24) and Jamie Hector (The Wire). The pilot shows Bosch hunting for the killer of a 13-year-old boy, as well as standing trial after accusations that he murdered a serial killer. It was directed by Jim McKay and produced by Henrik Bastin of Fabrik Entertainment (The Killing).

boschMozart in the Jungle is an insider’s perspective on the backstage antics of orchestra musicians. The series will be written by Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom, The Darjeeling Limited), Jason Schwartzman (Saving Mr Banks, Moonrise Kingdom) and Alex Timbers, and will feature Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Heroes, Our Friends in the North), Gael Garcia Bernal, Saffron Burrows (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Law & Order), Lola Kirke, Bernadette Peters (Annie, Alice, Ugly Betty, Anastasia) and Peter Vack

Finally, Transparent centres on a Los Angeles-based family made up of a single dad (Jeffrey Tambor, The Larry Sanders Show, Arrested Development, The Hangover) and his three children, played by Gaby Hoffman, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass. During the pilot, it’s revealed that the father is keeping a secret from his kids which, once uncovered, may significantly alter their perspectives. Written by Jill Soloway (Six Feet Under, The United States of Tara), it’s described by as “the critical favourite”, as well as “the artsiest thing Amazon has done and the show that’s most likely to be discussed at your local independent coffee shop”.
