Japan is Bringing a Pokémon Team to the 2014 World Cup

Pokemon World Cup

Pikachu, Japanese footballers choose you! The Japan National Football Team has declared the Electric Mouse Pokémon its official mascot for the 2014 World Cup in Rio.

Along with ten other Pokémon – Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Fennekin, Froakie, Chespin, Meowth, Pancham, Litleo and Helioptile – Pikachu will be heading over to Brazil to cheer on the players. Even if you’re no football fan, it’s probably worth tuning in just to see these guys – look how amazingly adorable they all look in their little kits!

Kotaku kind of hits the nail on the head when discussing why they might have been chosen: “Who could possibly score a goal on a team fronted by these little guys?” Cuteness-induced paralysis! And of course, failing that, perhaps Pikachu’s Nuzzle or Thunder Wave attacks could lend a hand? Using monsters to attack your opponents is totally within the rules of the game, right?

The Japan team’s official kit has been designed by Adidas, who have “entered into an agreement with Nintendo”. Presumably, this means we can expect to see whole lot of Pokémon-themed sports gear in shops before too long, which would probably be the best get-fit incentive for gamers since the invention of Wii Fit. Who knows, maybe we’ll even get a football video game featuring Pokémon teams!
