Following Superman’s 75th birthday last year, another of DC’s biggest stars is set to hit the three-quarter century mark in 2014. Like his fellow DC superhero, Batman has celebrated the landmark occasion with an animated anniversary short, created by producer Bruce Timm

The three-minute animation was developed from a lost tale from Batman’s past, and sees the Dark Knight battle a strange giant and rescue a damsel in distress at the lair of Dr. Hugo Strange, one of the first supervillains to appear in Batman comics.

Since his first publication in 1939, Batman has been reimagined in countless ways. From the camp and comic, 1960s Adam West TV series, to Tim Burton‘s brooding, gothic movies, all the way up to Chris Nolan‘s disturbingly realistic Dark Knight trilogy, Batman’s many transformations have perhaps been greater than those of any other major superhero. In a DC All Access interview, Timm described his film as “a throwback to Batman’s origins”, saying that he had opted to create a sort of “period piece” true to Bob Kane‘s early designs. You can watch the full interview and see Scott Snyder introduce the new Batman Eternal series in the video below.

Other celebrations scheduled to take place throughout the year include a Batman Day on 23rd July, new releases from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and, of course, the upcoming Gotham TV series.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment and of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, said:

“Batman is one of the greatest characters ever created, in comics or elsewhere, and even after 75 years he continues to wildly fascinate fans. He is an integral part of pop culture and has successfully captured the imagination of the entire world. The origin of Batman, Bruce Wayne and the famous citizens of Gotham are legendary and likely a story you know inside out, even if you’ve never picked up a comic book in your life, and that speaks volumes to the character’s immense popularity and the constructs of the original mythology.”
