Fowl Play? Flappy Bird 2.0 to Launch in August

Flappy Bird, the addictive retro-style game that launched a thousand clones, is set to return to app stores this year.

Speaking to CNBC, Flappy Bird maker Dong Nguyen promised that Flappy Bird 2.0 would be less addictive and would feature a multiplayer option.

In Flappy Bird, players must navigate the titular bird through a side-scrolling series of protruding pipes by tap-touch alone. This infuriatingly simple concept lent to its high replay value as players tried to beat their previous high score.

To the outcry of millions, Flappy Bird was pulled from app stores in early February. Shortly after, parodies of began to climb into Top 10 app download charts, featuring Nyan Cat, Fall Out Boy and a fish in place of the big-lipped bird.

Although surprised by its popularity, Nguyen was reportedly earning $50,000 a day from the app and receiving death threats. He kept away from the public eye until an interview with Rolling Stone in March.

Will the next official Flappy Bird reach the same dizzying heights of fame as its predecessor? We’ll have to wait until August to find out.
