North American distributor Viz Media announced at a panel at the Anime Central convention in Chicago that they have acquired the home video, streaming and digital rights to all episodes of the original Sailor Moon anime.

Viz intend to release ALL 200 episodes of Toei Animation’s Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S, Sailor Moon Super S and Sailor Moon Sailor Stars on Blu-Ray and DVD.

The episodes will be uncut and in its original Japanese with English subtitles. Viz even made sure to answer a few questions regarding this on Facebook and stated that, “all relationships, genders and names will be restored to the original Japanese storyline.” The release will also contain a brand new English dub, and according to Viz it is one that will be overseen by the creator herself, Naoko Takeuchi.

Viz have also acquired the rights to the three movies, Sailor Moon R: The Movie, Sailor Moon S: The Movie and Sailor Moon Super S: The Movie.

“We’re pleased to partner with Viz Media to bring the beloved Sailor Moon anime series back to North America,” said Toei Animation’s General Manager, Masayuki Endo. “We look forward to fans current and new discovering and falling in love with this classic series all over again,” he said, describing how this release will be “the most accurate adaptation available.”

There is currently no release date for when the Blu-Ray and DVD sets will hit the shelves, only that it will be later this year in autumn.

Earlier this year, Viz received high praise for their remastered Blu-Ray release of the anime series Ranma ½ in US. Given the high standard and care taken with Ranma ½, the upcoming Blu-Ray of Sailor Moon could be the best she has ever looked. Let’s just hope that it’s region free.

Viz will also be streaming the original episodes with subtitles – those in the US can watch the first four episodes from 19 May on Neon Alley and Hulu, with two new episodes available every Monday.

On top of this, Viz have also managed to acquire the licence to the upcoming Sailor Moon Crystal. Not much else was mentioned as to how they would handle the release of the new anime, only that more information would be revealed in the future. Sailor Moon Crystal will premiere on NicoNico from 5 July.
