Frozen’s Elsa is coming to Storybrooke, but who else should join her?

*Warning: this article includes spoilers for the Once Upon a Time Season 3 finale*

The writing was on the wall, or the Tumblr dashboard to be precise. Once Upon a Time had delivered a killer finale that left fan-girls weeping over their ships. There had been over an hour of “Captain Swan” fun that resulted in a long-awaited kiss. There was a wedding but there were also a couple of revelations. The writers and producers had taken their fans on a wild ride but they had one last bomb to drop. Elsa was coming.

At the very end of the episode a vase is broken, spilling a blue liquid. The liquid pools together and lifts itself upwards to create the shape of a person. The liquid solidifies and then vanishes to reveal a woman in a pale blue dress. She removes a glove and throws her hand to the side and a stream of ice flows downward. The ice, the dress and even the braided hair. It had to be Elsa.

Executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz confirmed, “That was Elsa.” So this isn’t a variation on the Snow Queen, this is the Elsa from the world of Disney’s Frozen. Of course, that’s no guarantee that the producers won’t play around with the concept – this is Once Upon a Time, after all. There isn’t word yet on whether we’ll be seeing some of Frozen‘s other characters, although fans are hoping that Anna will follow her sister into this world. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kitsis explained:

“[What] we loved so much about the character of Elsa was that she was considered a villain but she never really was. She was misunderstood. That, on our show, speaks to us so strongly, that it was a toy we had to play with. It’s funny because I see lots of people [saying] “Oh! Did Disney ask them to do this?” It’s quite the opposite. It’s actually quite hard to get these characters on the show. It’s not like you get a call from Mickey Mouse saying, “I want you to sell mermaids this week.” It’s the opposite. It’s very hard to get these. We were very honored that Disney allowed us to take this toy off the shelf and let us play with it.”

Exciting news, then, but who else from the Disney universe should follow in Elsa’s footsteps and who do we think could play them?

Idina Menzel would be a lot of people’s first choice, especially if Once Upon a Time were to do a musical special (that’s got to happen at some point, right?), although her taking part would require extreme luck in the timing as she typically gets tied up performing on Broadway. But you know who is currently staring in a show where characters are killed off regularly? Natalie Dormer. She can walk that fine line between kind and cunning and you just know she’d look awesome in that hair.

The Princess and the Frog and its characters deserve so much more love and attention. Tiana is hard-working, strong-willed and loves to cook (A competitor to Granny maybe?). And who better to play such an amazing character than Nicole Beharie? She might be busy with Sleepy Hollow, but we would love to see this happen.

Henry has grown a lot in the last couple of years, so it really feels like Storybrooke is missing out on younger characters. The only problem is that Lilo’s heart and soul belongs in Hawaii and to take her out of that might ruin part of what makes her special. So maybe we could have a cheesy holiday episode? Fan-girls might just faint if they got to see Hook and Rumple in swim shorts. For our fancast there was only one choice: Lauren Beach. She hasn’t been on TV for a couple of years but she’s Hawaiian born and brave enough to do stand up. Sounds like the perfect Lilo to us.

Quasimodo and Esmerelda

quasi esma

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a gothic tale originally by Victor Hugo. Quasimodo is a character who faces hardship and humiliation only to be saved by a beautiful gypsy called Esmerelda. Both characters seem perfect for Once Upon a Time. With so many of our favourites making amends and finding happy endings, it might be time to go back to characters who are still in a darker place. Tom Hardy is an actor who can pull off big dramatics and it would be interesting to see what Chloe Bennet could do with a character like Esmerelda.

A Llama

So imagine it. A llama walks into Storybrooke and starts following Emma everywhere. It doesn’t speak and no one knows where it came from. It’s just sort of there. We get hints that maybe this is an Emperor’s New Groove situation but it’s not certain. Nothing else happens but the llama.

Okay, okay, we might have been joking about the llama thing (maybe). But Kuzco is too much fun to miss out on. Imagine him threatening to flatten Storybrooke to make room for his summer home, only for Regina to put a spell on him… For this one we just had to pick Aziz Ansari. He’s made his name on Parks and Recreation and has the charm and comedy chops to pull off a character like Kuzco.

Jack Skellington

jack: matt smith

This one might require some tweaking as being faced with a life-sized doll of the pumpkin king might be a little too frightening out of context. But what if he were to be recreated in a way that allowed for a live actor with a really cool costume? He could start out as the villain, only for them to discover he was only trying to be good the whole time. Matt Smith‘s got the frame for it and wouldn’t have any problem balancing funny with spooky.

Hercules and the Greek Gods

There have been a lot of fairytale princesses and evil witches but bringing Gods into the mix might help keep things fresh. The entire cast going up against Hades would really be something to see. Hercules would require the right actor to make him loveable rather than boring. Another Game of Thrones actor, Jason Momoa, is a fan favourite. He’s got the muscles and he’s definitely got the charm.

Now that we’ve had our fun, it’s your turn. What characters would you love to see in Once Upon a Time and what would your dream casting be?
