The first trailer for Studio Ghibli’s When Marnie Was There was recently broadcast on TV in Japan and it has now found its way online.

Based on the novel by Joan G. Robinson, it tells the story of Anna (voiced by Sara Takatsuki), a foster child who is sent to spend her summer with an old couple on the shores of Hokkaido. She soon comes across a house where she meets a girl called Marnie (voiced by Kasumi Arimura). They become friends, only for Anna to slowly learn that Marnie is not all that she seems.

It is the second feature film to be directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, following Arrietty. The trailer features no dialogue and instead plays the song Fine on the Outside by Priscilla Ahn, which is the film’s theme song.

When Marnie Was There opens in Japan on 19 July.
