After the Happy Ever After – Disney is Making an Enchanted Sequel

Seven years after Disney released its hugely popular, live-action fairytale film Enchanted, a sequel is now in the pipeline under the direction of Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, The Guilt Trip).

Directed by Disney veteran Kevin Lima, the original Enchanted is a knowing, affectionately mocking look back at the company’s traditional princess fare, challenging the notion of love at first sight (or perhaps first song), and the easy happy ever afters promised by most of its predecessors. It tells the story of soon-to-be-princess Giselle (Amy Adams), an inhabitant of the animated, fantasy land of Andalasia whose life suddenly becomes a lot more complicated when she finds herself lost in the real world and befriends divorce attorney and single dad Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and his daughter Morgan (Rachel Covey).

The break from tradition both in style and content was a bold but ultimately lucrative move for Disney, resulting in a $340 million box office gross worldwide, as well as Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.

On board to script Enchanted 2 are Shrek 2 and The Smurfs writing duo, J. David Stem and David N. Weiss, who will adapt an earlier draft by Jessie Nelson. Enchanted producers Barry Josephson and Barry Sonnenfeld will return for the sequel, though there’s no news yet on the film’s cast. Perhaps, rather than following Giselle for a second time, we can expect to see a little more of Prince Edward’s (James Marsden) and Princess Nancy’s (Idina Menzel) life together in Andalasia after their hasty marriage at the end of the first film? Or maybe we’ll get to see what happens next to Nathaniel (Timothy Spall) after the downfall of his evil mistress, Queen Narissa (Susan Sarandon). Let us know your thoughts!
