An All-New Captain America and Avengers Line-up

Following on from the recent news of a female Thor, Marvel have made another big announcement. Joe Quesada, made an appearance on the Colbert Report and revealed that Sam Wilson would be taking on the stars and stripes as the new Captain America. If that name doesn’t sound familiar (if you watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it should), Sam Wilson is The Falcon.

“I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam. It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts things up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.” – Rick Remender

In a similar fashion to the upcoming Thor storyline, Steve will also be robbed of his usual strength. Rick Remender revealed that this will be the culmination of a long-term plan.

“This is the fireworks factory we’re arriving at, and now everything’s going to blow up and be very pretty and exciting to look at. It leads into an evolution of Steve Rogers’ character that I had very early when I was given the job. I think that it’s important with these stories to do things that are natural and make sense and have an inherent logic to the universe, but are also constantly shifting and exciting, keeping the drama high. In order to do that it really comes down to creating new dynamics.”

Major changes will be happening elsewhere in the Marvel Universe and we won’t see that more clearly than with the Avengers in Avengers NOW! (presumably a progression on from Marvel NOW!). The new roster (seen pictured at the top of this article) contains a few surprises such as Angela, a Neil Gaiman creation, and two of the Inhumans, Medusa and Inferno.

Taking centre stage are “the big three” but with a female Thor and Sam Wilson carrying the Captain America shield, it’s a very different image than it has been in the past. Even Iron Man has a drastic new look.

In November the series Superior Iron Man will see Tony Stark heading to San Francisco where he thinks he’s got some ideas on how to improve the city. Although we are warned that Tony Stark will become a character who is “hard to root for”.

This could lead to some fun exchanges with new versions of Thor and Cap potentially challenging Iron Man on his decisions. Although Cap disagreeing with Stark isn’t anything new, to see the challenge coming from happy-go-lucky Sam Wilson would make for a change.
