Xena: Disney Princess – artist reimagines the action heroine with a twist

Xena_-_Title_01

Disney Princesses have seen all manners of new lives in their recently popular art renaissance as characters in Star WarsHalloween trick-or-treaters and Pokemon trainers. Going one step further, Artist NIA has redesigned a certain Warrior Princess with a classic Disney twist.

Xena

Heavily reminiscent of the art style seen in Disney’s Hercules, NIA incorporates every detail of Xena’s fighter look, including her trademark Chakram.

In an interview with The Escapist, NIA said “Although at the time I didn’t understand the significance of her character in popular culture, my recent interest in reviving her is simply because right now we just don’t have those well rounded leading female characters that were so prominent in the ’90s. We need more Xenas & Gabrielles, Buffys, and Dana Scullys on the big and small screens for little girls to admire.”

Initially a spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess was an action-adventure fantasy series created by John Schulian and Robert Tapert, and fronted by Lucy Lawless in the titular role. Accompanied by Renee O’Connor as her brave sidekick Gabrielle, the show followed the duo’s adventures of fighting bad guys and saving lives in ancient Greece and beyond to help Xena on her quest for redemption. The show also played host to a bevy of now-famous faces including Gina Torres, Karl Urban and Selma Blair. Debuting in 1995, Xena: Warrior Princess enjoyed a successful run of 134 episodes in six seasons before it ending in 2001, along the way spawning comic books, video games, books and annual conventions that still take place in the US and the UK.

And with rumours still rife of a film or TV reunion, could a cartoon be the vehicle in which Xena makes her glorious return to our screens?
