Tetris the movie falling to the big screen soon

A big screen adaptation of the video game Tetris is currently in the works. Yes.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Threshold Entertainment have the rights to produce a live action Tetris film. There is currently no cast or director, but there is a story.

“We have a story behind Tetris which makes it a much more imaginative thing,” said Threshold’s CEO Larry Kasanoff. “It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie. This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”

Kasanoff has experience in adapting games to the big screen, being one of the producers behind the live action adaptation of Mortal Kombat and its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. More recently he has worked on the animated Lego movies, Bionicle: The Legend Reborn, Lego: The Adventures of Clutch Powers and Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out.

“Brands are the new stars of Hollywood,” says Kasanoff, who explains that what we will see in Tetris the movie “is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.”

The original Tetris was developed by Alexey Pajitnov and released in June 1984. The game reached worldwide popularity when Nintendo bundled the game with every Game Boy handheld.
