Under The Dome renewed for third season

Under_the_dome_logoWith the summer now behind us and the new seasons of our favourite shows underway thoughts turn to the shows that the kept their spots warm over the past few months.  One such show for CBS was the science fiction drama, Under The Dome, which despite being the number one scripted show of that period was not renewed straight away following the blood bath of a season finale.

So now several weeks after the show has ended, CBS has finally confirmed that the show will return next year for a third run. The news was confirmed by CBS Entertainment Chairperson Nina Tassler who said in her statement that, “We continue to see summer as a great place for unique concepts, innovative business models and passionate television audiences.”

Under the Dome Panel (Mackenzie Lintz)_MG_8029Aside from the show airing on the network it also airs on Amazon Prime Instant Video four days after it is first broadcast, a deal which meant that the network received a reported $750,000-$900,000 per episode. Which if the rumoured $3 million production cost per episode is true would mean that when coupled with the tax credits the show receives for filming in North Carolina, the international sales and any money received for the product placement (Microsoft Surface Tablet anyone?), the show is potentially close to or even breaking even before it airs. So when you take this in to consideration it is no wonder that the series is returning as the cost of television production is not cheap and so a deal like this when coupled with the shows positive ratings would make it an almost easy decision to make.

A firm release date and even number of episodes has yet to be released but if we are to look at the shows history for inspiration then we would likely suggest it will be returning with 13 episodes in June/July 2015.

What do you think of this news? What would you like to see happen in the new season? Will you be attending the MCM London Comic Con this October to meet MacKenzie Lintz (Norrie Calvert-Hill), Grace Victoria Cox (Melanie Cross) and Aisha Hinds (Carolyn Hill) from the show?
