My Little Pony movie to hit the big screen in 2017

Following Hasbro properties such as Transformers and G.I Joe, both of which have become successful movie franchises, a movie version of My Little Pony seemed inevitable. 2013 saw the straight-to-video film Equestria Girls, but now Hasbro Studios have announced that a big screen My Little Pony film is slated for release in 2017.

“We’re very excited about the potential of that movie,” said Stephen Davis, the president of Hasbro Studios, who is currently in discussion with studios that will distribute the film “on the broadest possible number of screens.”

It’s believed that the animated film will follow on from the Friendship is Magic series. It will be produced through Hasbro’s new label, Allspark Pictures, with Megan McCarthy, one of the writers on Friendship is Magic and Equestria Girls, as a co-executive producer. The script is to be written by Joe Ballarini. There are currently no plot details or who will direct.

The Friendship is Magic iteration of My Little Pony was launched in 2010. The fifth season of the animated series is set to be broadcast in early 2015.
