Heroes and Villains – Art and Drinks at the Aloft Hotel ExCel

A popular place for con-goers to set up camp, the Aloft Hotel is conveniently situated right next door to the ExCeL Exhibition Centre where the biannual MCM London Comic Con is held. This autumn, in honour of its well-established connection with the event, Aloft is holding an exhibition of comic-themed artwork, in addition to serving some truly “super” cocktails.

From now until Thursday 6th November, a range of exciting artwork by Incandescent Artists will be displayed in Aloft’s W XYZ Bar. Sharing the hotel’s passion for championing emerging artists and providing a platform for new talent, Incandescent Artists is a creative collective that includes the likes of David “Gnasher” Nash, whose huge mural in tribute to Rik Mayall recently made the news, Stencil Art Prize finalist John “Grafeeney” Feeney and Parlee ERZ, known for his murals of baby superheroes which can be found around London. All of the work on display is for sale, and those who come to view it can also enjoy one (or more!) of three superhero cocktails, expertly created by Aloft’s mixologists.

To celebrate the start of this October’s MCM convention, Aloft also played host to a special “Heroes and Villains” event featuring some fantastic live spoken word poetry and music by Incandescent’s performance arm, Creative Bubble. As well as checking out some great paintings, members of the MCM Buzz team were invited to enjoy the show, and it was fascinating to see the huge variety of ways that artists across different media had responded to the theme.

We were also treated to some samples from Aloft’s new drinks menu, opting for cocktails called The Hulk and The Wonder Woman. A long, refreshing drink served with fresh lime, The Hulk combines gin with cooling cucumber, ginger beer and a twist of elderflower. Perfect for those with a sweeter tooth, meanwhile, The Wonder Woman is a fruity mix blending grapefruit vodka and cherry brandy with strawberry syrup and cranberry juice. Called The Human Torch, the third cocktail on offer is composed of vodka, aperol and grapefruit juice: if you get chance to try it over the weekend, you’ll have to let us know what you think!

The artwork on display in the hotel is reasonably priced, and will be available to view and buy until 6th November. For more information, visit the Aloft Hotel website.
