Check out the new trailer for Disney’s The Descendants

Back in June, MCM Buzz gave you an exciting early glimpse of Disney’s upcoming TV film, The Descendants, courtesy of photographer Crystal Maxwell. It’s certainly been a long time coming, but today, we’re excited to reveal the first teaser trailer for the live-action movie. Check it out below:

The short clip doesn’t tell us much about what we can expect from The Descendants, though it does give a sense of the look and tone of the film. What we do already know is that it tells the story of the offspring of all your favourite Disney characters. In a magical kingdom ruled over by Queen Belle and King Adam (the Beast), the son of this happy pair, Prince Ben, decrees that the children of the villains formerly banished to a forbidden island will now be allowed to return to the mainland to attend a prep school alongside the kids of the Disney “goodies”. The question is, does the poisoned apple ever fall far enough from the tree for any of the villains’ spawn to redeem themselves?

In addition to Prince Ben (played by Mitchell Hope), the volatile mix of teenage characters includes Jayden (Booboo Stewart), Carlos (Cameron Boyce), Mal (Dove Cameron) and Evvie (Sofia Carson), the children of villains Jafar (Aladdin), Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmations), Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty) and the Evil Queen Grimhilde (Snow White), as well as Jane (Brenna D’Amico), Audrey (Sarah Jeffery), Doug (Zachary Gibson), Lonnie (Diane Doan), Aziz (Dejan Loyola) and Chad Charming (Jedidiah Goodacre), the descendants of good guys Fairy Godmother (Cinderella), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Dopey (Snow White) Mulan, Aladdin, and Cinderella, respectively. Already, we’ve seen hints of a possible romance, or at least friendship, between Mal and Ben. Both look set to be key characters, as Mal’s appearance in the trailer emphasises.

It will be interesting to see how the adult actors bring to life the classic Disney characters we know and love, in particular whether Kristin Chenoweth’s Maleficent can live up to Angelina Jolie’s excellent and heartfelt portrayal of the character. With The Descendants following soon after the likes of MaleficentFrozen and Wreck-It Ralph, it seems that telling the villains’ side of the story is a particular preoccupation of Disney’s at present.

Directed by Kenny Ortega (High School Musical, Gilmore Girls, Hocus Pocus) from a script by writing team Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (Runaway Bride, Desperate Housewives, Chicken Little), Disney’s Descendants is set to air next year. An official broadcast date has yet to be confirmed.
