Music is set to be playing down in Fraggle Rock once again in a new feature film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Variety has revealed. The movie is being developed by New Regency, with Gordon-Levitt also serving as its producer.

First broadcast in 1983, Fraggle Rock was created by Jim Henson and produced by HBO, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Henson Associates and UK company Television South. The original series ran for five seasons, with some regional variations. Its story revolved around tiny, playful creatures called Fraggles who live in hidden caves, connected to both our world and that of the enormous Gorgs. The five main characters – Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red – often interacted with humans or “silly creatures” in “Outer Space”. They also lived alongside another cave-dwelling race called the Doozers – industrious beings who spent much of their time building.

Fast proving himself one of the industry’s brightest and most multi-talented stars, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has appeared in a hugely diverse range of films, from blockbusters like The Dark Knight Rises, Looper and Inception to indie projects like 2013’s Don Jon (which he also wrote and directed), as well as animated movies including Treasure Planet and The Wind Rises. In addition to acting, he runs his own film production company, HitRECord, and is a co-producer of the international theatrical sensation, Slava’s Snow Show. In 2013, it was announced that he would co-produce Warner Bros.’ upcoming adaptation of The Sandman comics series, alongside David S. Goyer and the original series’ creator, Neil Gaiman. Late last year, it was announced that he would take on the title role in Oliver Stone’s thriller Snowden.

The Fraggle Rock won’t be Gordon-Levitt’s first appearance in a Henson production: in Christmas 2013, he appeared in The Muppets’ Holiday Spectacular, performing a role-reversed version of “Baby it’s Cold Outside” with Lady Gaga that became an online hit. Speaking to Variety, the actor declared himself a huge fan of the company’s work, stating that “the first screen personas [he] ever loved were Henson creations, first on Sesame Street and then on Fraggle Rock.”

“Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”
