Ian McKellen joins Beauty and the Beast remake

The latest cast member to join the cast of the upcoming, live-action remake of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is Ian McKellen, Entertainment Weekly reports. McKellen will take on the role of the Beast’s over-anxious clock, Cogsworth.

Already something of a hero in fantasy and genre cinema thanks to his key parts in the Lord of the Rings and X-Men franchises, McKellen has a huge fanbase among young movie fans and his involvement in Beauty and the Beast is likely to be a big draw for audiences. His latest film, Mr Holmes, in which he plays an ageing version of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective, is due for release in June.

McKellan joins a cast which already consists of Emma Watson and Dan Stevens (Downton AbbeyThe Fifth Estate) in the title roles, as well as Kevin Kline as Belle’s father, “crazy old” Maurice, Luke Evans (Dracula UntoldThe Hobbit) as the brash and self-obsessed Gaston and Frozen‘s Josh Gad as his hapless lackey LeFou. Other residents of the Beast’s castle will include Emma Thompson as motherly teapot Mrs Potts, and Audra McDonald (Private PracticeThe Bedford DiariesMr Sterling) as the chatty wardrobe, Madame de la Grande Bouche or Garderobe. The film is directed by Bill Condon and produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.
