Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene for Underworld: Next Generation

It’s been confirmed that Kate Beckinsale will reprise her role as Selene in the latest addition to the Underworld franchise, titled Underworld: Next Generation. Also returning under an option agreement is Divergent‘s Theo James, who played David in Underworld: Awakening.

The new Underworld film will be directed by Anna Foerster, who has previously directed episodes of the popular Starz TV series Outlanders, as well as working as director of photography on White House Down and Anonymous and second unit DOP on The Day After Tomorrow and 10,000 BC. Foerster will be the first woman to direct a female-led horror franchise: interestingly, news of her involvement follows reports of an ACLU investigation into discrimination against women directors in Hollywood.

A script for the movie has been written by Cory Goodman (PriestThe Last Witch Hunter), and while we have no firm plot details as yet, it’s been reported that the film will focus on a new, younger generation of vampires and werewolves, locked in a seemingly never-ending battle that began in previous instalments.

The first Underworld film was released in 2003, and has since then been followed by a further three films, with the latest movie taking the franchise total up to five. A sixth movie is also already being planned, but details about that are currently unavailable.

Underworld: Next Generation begins shooting in Prague in October, and is set for release in 2016.
