Syfy Goes Grindhouse With Blood Drive

Cars fuelled by blood? We’re still trying to make up our minds whether that’s green or not. But that’s just one aspect of Blood Drive, a new series given the green light by the US Syfy channel that promises to bring a grungy ’70s grindhouse vibe to 21st century TV.

Death Race 2000

Is Blood Drive the new Death Race 2000?

It certainly sounds like a bizarre twist on Roger Corman’s legendary Death Race 2000. The Hollywood Reporter describes Blood Drive as, “a high-octane story set in a near-apocalyptic future centered on Los Angeles’s last good cop who must join a twisted and bloody cross-country death race that includes cars.” It includes, “a dangerous female character who sees people as little more than fuel.” We’re guessing cycling is an extreme sport.

Syfy boss Dave Howe calls Blood Drive a “highly stylised roller coaster ride,” with “fast-paced thrills…Blood Drive will make an exciting and edgy addition to Syfy’s growing slate of original scripted series.”

The network has bypassed the pilot process and ordered a full 13-episode series. The creator is James Roland while John Hlavin (Underworld: Awakening) and David Straiton (Bates Motel).

Welcome to the “rev”-olution. And – blimey – it’s a new series not based on comic!
