JJ Abrams Broke Back While Filming Star Wars

Harrison Ford may have been the one rushed to hospital when a door fell on him on the set of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens at Pinewood in June last year but it’s director JJ Abrams who’s still suffering. It turns out he broke his back when he rushed to help the Han Solo actor who broke his ankle in the incident.

“The guy is like a real-life superhero,” Abrams enthused about Ford to Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. “He should have the Marvel logo above his name. He’s down there and he’s toughing it out. He’s a super human being. He’s literally lying there making jokes.”

Abrams went to help out when the accident happened but ended up the walking wounded himself: “This door had gone down, and I’m trying to help lift it up…  and I feel this pop in my back. I’m like, ‘Huh? That’s weird.’”

Visiting a doctor a couple he days later he learned that he’d broken the L4 vertebra in his back. And while Ford has now recovered enough to crash light aeroplanes, Abrams is still wearing his back brace.

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens on 18 December. If things keep going at this rate,  the premier will be attended by casts and crew. (sorry, we’re so, so sorry…)
