League Of Gentlemen Reunion In Doctor Who Series 9 (sort of…)

Reece Shearsmith is to guest star in the ninth series of Doctor Who in a story written by his old League Of Gentlemen colleague Mark Gatiss, reports The Radio Times.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be filming Doctor Who as Mark Gatiss has written a fantastic role for me in a very scary episode,” said Shearsmith. “It has been so exciting to be part of a very singular episode – which, I can say with authority will be unlike any previous episode of Doctor Who.”

“It’s a joy to play a part in the show – certainly a badge of honour.”

Shearsmith played Patrick Troughton in An Adventure in Space and Time, the Gatiss-penned docu-drama about the early years of Doctor Who, starring David Bradley as William Hartnell.

“I’m delighted to be writing again for Peter and Jenna’s brilliant Tardis team and very excited about this particular story,” says Gatiss. “It’s been brewing in the dark recesses of my mind for a while now! I’m also chuffed to bits to finally welcome my old friend Reece Shearsmith onto the show. He’s been badgering me for ten years!”

Gatiss is penning the as-yet untitled ninth episode of the series. With most of the rest of this year’s crop of Doctor Who comprising two-parters, it’s unclear yet whether this episode will connect in some (maybe tenuous) way with the following episode, written by Sarah Dollard, or whether these two episodes will be truly stand-alones. Both are directed by Justin Molotnikov.

Doctor Who returns to BBC1 on 19th September for another 12-episode series.
