Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The Assassin Trailer

Hou_Hsiao_hsie_the_assassin1Art house Taiwanese social-realist cinema director and Cannes darling Hou Hsiao-hsien (Three Times, Flight Of The Red Balloon) has made an unexpected movie into wuxia territory, with The Assassin, a period piece about revenge, with swords, fighting and, indeed, antagonists glowering at each other on a roof.

But by all reports the film is still thoroughly arthouse at heart – for instance there’s a black-and-white in 1.33:1 ratio (that’s TV-screen-before-widecreeen shaped for those not versed in ratio lore) prologue, in which Yinniang (Shu Qi) is told by her mentor to kill a couple of corrupt officials. Plus the jury at this year’s Cannes gave Hou Hsiao-hsien the best director gong so it has to be slightly more highbrow than Return Of The One-Armed Swordsman.

And we have to admit – some of the images in this trailer look absolutely gorgeous.

As yet, detail of a UK release have yet to be announced.
