Why Some Star Wars: The Force Awakens Names Are Being Kept A Mystery

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, JJ Abrams has admitted that the full names of two characters in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens have been kept secret for a specific reason.

It’s been noted by various pundits that  John Boyega’s Finn and Daisy Ridley’s Rey have only been given forenames so far. Is that because their surnames might give away vital plot twists?

“I will only say about that that it is completely intentional that their last names aren’t public record,” replies Abrams archly.

On the subject of naming characters, Abrams reveals that Kylo Ren earned that name after joining the Knights of Ren, while Poe Dameron was partially named after Abrams’s daughter’s stuffed polar bear called Po.
