Clive Owen Joins Cast Of Luc Besson’s Massive Space Opera Valerian

Valérian_laurelineChildren Of Men and Sin City star Clive Owen has joined Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) and Cara Delavingne (Paper Towns) in the cast of Valerian, the $180 million budget space opera film from The Fifth Element director Luc Besson.

The film is based on the Valérian et Laureline a comic book series Besson loved as a child. Created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières, it began publication in 1967 and ran until 2010. The series focuses on the adventures of Valérian and his redheaded female companion, Laureline both of them spatio-temporal agents of the Terran Empire guarding against temporal paradoxes caused by rogue time-travellers. Owen will play Commander Arün Filitt and shooting begins next year.

The full title of the film is apparently Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets and its visual style is said to be a mix of Star Wars, Blade Runner and Besson’s own The Fifth Element. There are only five major human characters and plus hordes of weird alien creatures. At Comic Con he told reporters that he thought he had the script ready several years ago but tore it up after watching Avatar.
