Has Netflix’s Luke Cage Series Found Its Big Bad?

Alfre Woodard (Star Trek: First Contact, K-PAX, True Blood) has landed a role in Netflix’s upcoming Marvel-inspired superhero series Luke Cage, and  according to Deadline, she could be playing a new twist on the comic supervillain Black Mariah.

Luke Cage, which is due to premiere on Netflix next year, will star Mike Colter as the working class hero for hire who gains super strength in a failed experiment.

Officially Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning Woodard has joined the show as Minetta, a “powerful woman in local politics” who’ll have “an impact” on Cage’s life. However, Deadline’s sources claim that Minetta is based on Black Mariah, a criminal who’s been an enemy to both Cage and Iron Fist in the Marvel Comics universe. Since Iron Fist is going to get his own Netflix series soon too, will Minetta be a bridging character?

Marvel has made no comment but it would be great if she were, maybe even becoming the main nemesis in The Defenders crossover series – that brings all its TV heroes together – that Netflix is planning.
