Galaxy Quest TV Show In Development

It looks like a TV show of a film that was about a fake TV show that some aliens thought was real may have found a home with Amazon Studios. Yes Galaxy Quest the TV series is in development. So what happens now if some aliens tune into the new series and think that’s real? Would the universe collapse in on itself in some kind of meta-crisis?

Anyway, Galaxy Quest (1999) was awesome. It was far better than it had any right to be as it told the tale of a a bunch of actors who played a starship crew in a TV show who were kidnapped by some aliens who thought they were the real deal. A great cast helped – Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell – but the script was just razor sharp, a loving but brutally honest satire of the spaceship show genre. Even today producers of shows like Dark Matter must curse it because of the clichés they can no longer get away with.

So the thought of a TV show is exciting but also worrying. Could it maintain the standard of the film? Will a series stretch the concept too thinly?

Thankfully, many of the chief creative talents behind the film are on board (which is good because it’s doubtful they would ever get any of the film’s main cast back). The film’s co-writer Robert Gordon will pen the script and executive produce the pilot. The film’s director Dean Parisot will direct and executive produce. And executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are on board as well.

Amazon is partnering with producer Paramount Television on the project.

It’s too soon to get too excited because the show hasn’t even been given the green light for a pilot yet. But you know what they say: never give up, never surrender.
