Under The Dome Cancelled

Having run out of novelty value after about three episodes and padding out the next two and a half seasons with an increasingly ludicrous alien invasion plot, Under The Dome has been cancelled in the US by its network, CBS.

The show, based on the book by Stephen King, was about a small town that became encased by an inescapable, invisible dome. It launched to massive ratings in June 2013  but has been haemorrhaging viewers for the past couple of years.

CBS has announced the series will finish with its 10 September season three finale. “Two years ago, Under The Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world,” says CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler. “Dome’s event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of Extant and Zoo. We’re excited to present the final chapter in Chester’s Mill as the story comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up.”

Normally, we try to steer clear of snark here on Buzz. There’s too much of it on the internet and it’s too easy to be negative. But it’s difficult to feel disappointment as this news. Under The Dome was becoming increasingly embarrassing to watch. The show was concerned too much with “Why has this happened?” rather than, “How do we cope with what’s happened?” So the characters served the plot rather than the other way round and nobody at all like you’d expect characters in that situation to act. By the season three premiere – which introduced a bizarre Invasion Of The Body Snatchers element in a desperate attempt to kick-start another season’s worth of plot – it almost felt like it was begging to be put out of its misery. CBS are only really acting out of kindness.
