Idris Elba Teases “Groundbreaking” Villain For Star Trek Beyond

Idris elbaBeyond the fact that he’s being played by Idris Elba, we know very little about the big bad in the next Star Trek movie, Star Trek Beyond. Elba, however, has revealed a smidgin about his role during an MTV interview to promote Beasts of No Nation:

“Simon [Pegg] and the team have written a very interesting, complex journey for my character. You’ve never seen me play a character like this. I think Star Trek has prided itself as being quite classic when it comes to villains, like, ‘He’s a guy who wants to end the world,’ – there’s no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there’s a slightly different twist to that. It’s quite an interesting journey, which I think is groundbreaking for the franchise. But, it still keeps with the ‘classic bad guy is a classic bad guy’ tone.”

Now, our first thought was: a year before Star Trek Into Darkness – when we didn’t know who he was playing – Benedict Cumberbatch could have said the exact same quote! More interesting, however, is Elba saying that we’ve never seen him playing a character like this. Intriguing. Maybe he’s in drag.

There’s no clue if the character is new to the franchise or another “parallel Trek universe” makeover like Khan. Hey, Idris Elba as Harry Mudd, anyone?
