No Hotel Transylvania 3 For Director Genndy Tartakovsky

Following the massive box office opening for animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 2 Sony Pictures is eager for a third offering in the franchise. But if it happens director Genndy Tartakovsy – the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory – won’t be at the helm.

Hotel Transylvania 2

Hotel Transylvania 3 is going to happen without me,” says Tartakovsky in an interview with The Wrap. “Two is enough. I have a lot of other ideas, and I kind of have to express them and have them come out.”

Hotel Transylvania (2012) grossed $354.8 million worldwide while the sequel debuted in North America last weekend with a $47.5 million bow, breaking the record set by the original film for the best September opening of all time. Take a look at some of the art of Hotel Transylvania 2 here.

One film Tartakovsky won’t be directing is Sony’s animated Popeye. He left that project in March after years of development (he was speaking about it during interview to promote the original Hotel Transylvania).

“We made a version that we were happy with, and the studio didn’t like that version,” he says. “It’s still a mystery for me that they didn’t like that version. They wanted to do Popeye for the brand recognition and I loved the character and grew up with it, so there was a tug of war. They wanted it really updated and I can only update it a little before it isn’t Popeye anymore. To be truthful, it was in the middle of the Sony hack and the studio was really struggling. It was just really bad timing.”

Here’s the animation test for Tartakovsky’s Popeye that was released in 2014. Are you gutted we won’t see more like this?
