••• Admiral Ackbar – whose line “It’s a twap!” from Return of the Jedi is part of sci-fi legend – is definitely set to appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rumours that he would be appearing started when attendees thought they’d spotted him in Comic-Con sizzle reel but now actor and puppeteer Tim Rose, who played Akbar in Jedi, has confirmed he’ll reprise the role in the new Star Wars film. ••• Jeremy Irons  and acclaimed actor Brendan Gleeson have joined the cast of the Assassin’s Creed movie, which stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. Irons will be playing Cotillard’s father, while Gleeson plays Fassbender’s dad. [via Deadline]

••• CBS has renewed hilariously hokey series Zoo for a second series. Based on a book by  James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge, it’s basically a dramatised When Animals Go Bad. No UK broadcaster has yet been announced. CBS has yet to make a decision about a third series of the Halle Berry-starring Extant. [via The Hollywood Reporter]

••• Sibling scripters Jon and Erich Hoeber (Red) have been hired to write Sony’s adaptation of Gran Turismo. Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Tron: Legacy) is on board as director. [via The Hollywood Reporter]

••• The opening title sequence for season two The Leftovers, the show about a world having to cope with a tenth of the global population vanishing overnight, are so wildly different to the miserablism of season one it amounts to culture shock. They appear to reflect the new location for the show – a town where no one vanished, a place of hope. But just as we suspect the town has some dark secrets to reveal, there are some disturbing images of vanishing people mixed within the sunshine, smiles and jingly-jangly guitars.
