In an inspired piece of casting, Gotham has signed up Paul Reubens – still most famous as Pee-wee Herman – to play Penguin’s father. Penguin actor Robin Lord Taylor made the announcement at New York Comic Con (“Pee-wee Herman is playing my dad! What the hell?! Oh my God!”) and The Hollywood Reporter later confirmed that Reubens would be a recurring guest star as Mr Cobblepot/Kapelput Snr.

Bizarrely, it’s not Reubens’s first time in the role: he previously played Penguin’s father in the 1992 Tim Burton-directed Batman Returns.

Speaking about the violent, high-body count start to season two, Gotham producer John Stephens admitted during the New York Comic Con panel, “At its core, we want the show to feel dangerous… When you’re dealing with an origin, the dangerous thing is the audience feels like they know where the story is going to go.”

Former No Ordinary Family and The Shield actor Michael Chiklis, who joins in season two as Captain Barnes, was also at the panel. “He’s a real wallflower,” Chiklis joked about Barnes. “Barnes comes in as a countermeasure to the villainy that is running amok in Gotham. He serves as a mentor to [Jim] and he’s trying to pull him out of the muck, because he’s sliding down that slippery slope of the ends justify the means.”

Ben McKenzie – who plays Jim Gordon – added: “He’s learned the lay of the land, and now he’s going to put that into action… What he’s learned is sometimes you have to play a little fast and loose with the rules. Now he has a new boss, and his boss wants to kick ass.”
