Bourne & Edge Of Tomorrow Director For Gambit Movie

Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge Of Tomorrow) is set to direct 20th Century Fox’s X-Men spin-off movie, Gambit, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He replaces Rupert Wyatt (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes) who left the project earlier this year.

The choice of Liman is a little surprising as Liman previously worked with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg on Mr & Mrs Smith (Kinberg co-wrote the script) which was renowned for its production problems, while The Bourne Identity was also notorious for being a fraught production that was “saved in editing”. Hardly, you would think, a safe pair of hands for a movie that – because of the departure of its previous director and a release date locked in – now needs a fast-turnaround.

On the other hand, Liman has a good track record in directing critical and commercial hits and his two projects with Tom Cruise – Edge Of Tomorrow and the yet-to-be-released drugs drama Mena – were made without any horror stories about their production.

The official reason why Wyatt left the project was “scheduling conflicts” though it later emerged there were creative differences too. So while Liman may be a bit of a gamble for Gambit, you’d have assumed by this point that part of the furious round of meetings Fox has had with the director have covered things like “thinking along the same lines” creatively.

Gambit is Marvel’s energy-charged-playing-card-throwing Cajun mutant. He was previously played by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) but the new film will feature Channing Tatum in the title role.
