Universal Wants Tom Cruise To Topline In The Mummy Reboot

Universal is trying to tempt Tom Cruise to star in its reboot of The Mummy, a movie designed as the first entry in a new franchise that would see a whole bunch of universal monsters – such as Dracula, Frankenstein and the Invisible Man – existing in a shared movie universe.

This follows swiftly on from the news that the studio is also trying to tempt Angelina Jolie into the role of the Bride Of Frankenstein for the same franchise. Universal is clearly aiming high with this one. Who next? Johnny Depp as the Invisible Man? George Clooney as the Werewolf?

Alex Kurtzman – formerly best known as a scriptwriter and prodicer on such TV shows as Alias and Sleepy Hollow as well as the three Star Trek reboot films –  is helming the film, which will be set in present day and is set for release in Spring 2017. Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) has written the script.

A Van Helsing project, which Kurtzman has had a hand in scripting, is also currently in development.

The Mummy will begin shooting mid-February.
