Zach Galligan Talks Gremlins Reboot (Yeah, They’re Rebooting That Too)

Whether you realised it or not, Gremlins has joined the Hollywood conveyor belt of reboots, and the star of the original two films, Zach Galligan is happy to make a reappearance if it gets beyond development stages and in front of some cameras.

Screenwriter Carl Ellsworth (Goosebumps, Disturbia, The Last House On The Left remake, Red Dawn) is currently working on the scripts and the writer of the original film, Chris Columbus will co-produce along with Steven Spielberg. All of which is hopeful news, especially as most of Ellsworth’s films (Red Dawn being the exception) you could happily file under “better than you were expecting”. The director of the first two movies, Joe Dante, is not currently not involved and when asked about the subject in interviews recently seems pretty adamant he won’t be (and he sounds sincere rather than indulging in misdirection).

Meanwhile, Zach Galligan (who played Billy Peltzer) appeared at a Gremlins event at Leicester Square in London’s Prince Charles Cinema this week where he revealed:

“It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form. Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade. So the only thing they will be, and apparently are going to be doing, is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later. All of the elements from the first, at least the first Gremlins movie – Chris Columbus didn’t really have much to do with the second Gremlins movie so I don’t know how he feels about that – but all of the things and events that happened in the first one will be referred to. And apparently some of the characters from the first one will reappear in the new one they are planning right now. I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.”
