Is Neil Gaiman Planning A Gormenghast Movie?

Mervyn Peake’s sprawling fantasy land Gormenghast could be headed to the big screen courtesy of Neil Gaiman. Little is known about the project but the news comes straight from Gaiman’s Twitter feed, where sudden out of nowhere Gaiman announced, “Tomorrow we start talking to studios, and will soon find out which of them wants to make Mervyn Peake’s wonderful Gormenghast as a movie.”

The BBC Gorrmenghast

Gaiman is well known as a fans of Peake’s trilogy, Titus Groan (1946), Gormenghast (1950) and Titus Alone (1959). It’s a bizarre black comedy of politics an powers set in a fantasy earldom dominated by the huge Castle Gormenghast. Though there are no actual fantasy elements it feels like a gothic novel and there are some very strange ideas and characters.

The BBC made a highly stylised TV version starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Christopher Lee in 2000 which is well worth a watch if actually reading the books is too daunting a prospect.
