Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer Released

“We always knew they were coming back.” And they’re just about to, in Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 smash hit that turned blowing up famous landmarks into a Hollywood cliché. Sadly Hollywood has destroyed every famous landmark in the world in the meantime (often in films directed by Independence Day helmer Roland Emmerich, who’s back calling the shots on Resurgence) so there’s none of that going on in the trailer. But everything else you remember from the first film is back: the rousing speech, the big UFOs (bigger this time, of course), the creeping shadows, the innocents in peril, the airforce going into action. This is sequels how they used to make them; more of the same.

Many of the cast are returning too, though Will Smith has bailed. Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner, Judd Hirsch and Vivica A Fox reprise their roles while new stars include Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward.

Here’s the official synopsis: “We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defence programme to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

Independence Day: Resurgence is released in the UK on 24 June 2016.
