Xena Reboot Finds A Lost Writer For Showrunner

The Xena: Warrior Princess reboot series being developed by the US network NBC has hired former Lost, Medium and Helix writer/producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach to write the pilot and act as executive producer.

The original Xena, Lucy Lawless – what are the odds on her making a cameo?

Grillo-Marxuach was also the creator of that under-appreciated piece of genius known as The Middleman, a geek-referencing sci-fi spy show that generated a fiercely loyal fan base. More importantly as regards Xena, it featured a very strong, hugely charismatic, sassy central female character  (Natalie Morales as Wendy Watson). Oh, it was very, very funny.

Original series creators and executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are both involved in the new series. The search is underway to find an actress to play the title role, described as “a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation.”

The original show ran for six seasons from 1995 to 2001 and was a spin-off from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. However, as with the Bionic franchise it’s the woman who’s getting the remake first, not the guy. There’s must be some interesting socio-political conclusions to be drawn from that…?
