••• Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the second biggest box office hit ever in the States, overtaking Titanic on New Year’s Day. It has now reached $721 million in North America and we wouldn’t bet against it being the first film ever to make over $1 billion in one country alone. That may sound like a stretch, but after beating Titanic in just 16 days, who knows? Plus, industry pundits are predicting The Force Awakens will topple Avatar as the number one movie ever in North America by end-of-play Monday. Even taking inflation into account, that’s still one hell of a feat. Meanwhile, as of 31 December, The Force Awakens was number eight in the list of all-time global blockbusters with $1.331 billion, having overtaken Frozen. By the end of this first week end of 2016 it should easily have sailed past Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($1.341 billion) as well. In fact, the global number three spot (currently occupied by Jurassic World at $1.668 billion) looks easily within The Force Awaken’s grasp but then there’s a massive leap before it can challenge Cameron’s current brace of champs, Titanic ($2.187 billion) and Avatar ($2.788 billion). And if you want to take inflation into account, well, that’ll be a real struggle. But you never know… [via Deadline Hollywood]

••• The brilliantly bonkerssherlock-2 2 Sherlock: The Abominable Bride was the most-watched show on the UK on New Year’s Day with 8.4 million viewers beating EastEnders. That’s about 800,000 viewers down on the show’s previous New Year’s Day episode, the series three premier two years ago in 2014, but considering how viewing figures on the two main terrestrial channels have collapsed over the past couple of years, that’s a blimmin’ impressive result.

••• Here are three clips from the Supergirl mid-season premier for you viewing pleasure.

••• And here’s a Disney Channel teaser for Captain America: Civil War with presenters who may rot your teeth (you’ll see pretty quickly why we didn’t give this one its own separate article on the site).

kristen-bell••• According to Entertainment Weekly, Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell will be guest starring on  iZombie in the new year; iZombie is, if you didn’t know, the new show from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas. Sadly, we probably won’t get see her face. Bell will have a voice-over role in the episode “Fifty Shades Of Grey Matter” in which Liv (Rose McIver) eats the brains of a librarian who’s also a writer of erotic fiction. We guess Bell’s voice-over may be the voice of the author in some meta kind of way. Or maybe not…
